2020 – the year where all things came to a standstill due to Covid, I was blessed with the opportunity to experience turtle conservation work on Lang Tengah Island, when the project was unexpectedly revived, after a near 3-month halt due to the pandemic.

A brief summary will not do justice to the amazing experience I received. Living at the campsite, Turtle Bay, meant being surrounded by forest & waking up to blissful sounds of crashing waves daily. It was during the long night patrols where I learnt valuable hands-on experience working with turtles.  As a novice in the field, I was truly lucky to be able to apply theoretical knowledge to practice with 3 mother turtles and relocating their eggs to our campsite. I’ve also gained insights into coral conservation works. Brushing and cleaning growing coral fragments underwater at the nurseries brought diving to a higher purpose.

Aside from working hard, the days are fun-filled with forest trekking, snorkeling, beach cleaning, cliff jumping, or simply chilling around Turtle Bay, soaking in the beauty of Nature with a book.

Lang Tengah project – one needs to simply experience it for oneself to know the true value! The effort & dedication of the team, the work they tirelessly do to protect the lives & habitat are highly commendable. It may not be luxurious, but your heart will certainly be filled with contentment upon leaving.
